Artist's Statement

My painting practice navigates psychological space and the relationship between individuals and their surroundings. Borrowing imagery from landscape and architecture, this work oscillates between traditions of abstraction and realism. At its core, the work reflects an investment of time and labor; and mirrors a mental climate to events and experiences. I begin with a set of expectations and a specific image in mind, but the dynamic creative process leaves room for change. Each painting acts as a mile marker. While the initial intention may alter, time navigates around the original concept, allowing the work to expand and absorb surrounding life. Moments of grieving and loss or freedom and levity. This work grapples with a collective dialogue of time, landscape, and an evolving human response to the environments we inhabit.

Artist's Biography

Bonnie Smerdon is an artist based in Bellingham, Washington. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Western Washington University, with an emphasis in painting, sculpture, and dance. Her work has been featured in galleries and art spaces locally in Washington State, and internationally. In 2018 Bonnie participated as an artist in residence at The Old School in Hrisey, Iceland. With a continuing interest to bring art outside of a traditional gallery space, Bonnie has facilitated pop up art spaces for her own work, and supported her peers in devising alternative venues for visual art and performance. For her BFA thesis in 2015, Bonnie utilized and renovated a vacant space located in downtown Bellingham as a pop-up gallery for her solo show, Vestiges. In 2018, Smerdon was a featured artist in Artists of the North Sound, for What’s Up! Magazine. Smerdon’s paintings can be found at Ryan James Fine Arts in Kirkland WA, where her work has been represented since 2015.
