Artist's Statement

The pieces in this show are from a series of work titled "Rainier Botany and Esoterics" which originated from photo shoots in the alpine meadows and lush rain forests of Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington. The works feature hand silk-screened geometric designs in silver and gold ink on archival photo prints from medium-format film negatives. In the case of "Rainier Botany 8", the print is displayed in a shadow box with a silkscreen design on the acrylic front as well. The geometric designs on the prints are a modern visual dialogue that uses mathematical and scientific symbols to create a contemporary mythology that has a direct dialogue to the documentation of these scenes. Each piece is in the series is unique and will not be reproduced.

Artist's Bio

David Bellard was born in Pennsylvania in the age of analog photography. Fascinated by the aesthetics of film, he started using analog cameras throughout his formative years and was always interested in how the film negatives or prints could be physically altered outside the camera. This experimentation led him to a BFA and career in design, crisscrossing the United States to work for DreamWorks in Los Angeles and The Cleveland Play House in Ohio, while in his spare time creating art, exhibiting in galleries, and completing a residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. He later spent eight years in Washington DC as a creative director for Rare - helping partner agencies around the world design and implement behavior change campaigns. His work can be found on display in many corporate and private collections across the United States. Bellard lives in Seattle, Washington and works full-time on his photo compositions and commissioned projects with designers and art consultants across the United States.
