Artist's Statement

The Quiet Landscape

The subject matter of my work has grown out of an obsession with the natural world. I often travel to the wide open, empty spaces of farmland plateaus and the rural places of Eastern Washington. Away from the city’s dense humanity, I can feel my personal space expand. And I take deeper breaths.

Each photograph is my attempt to recreate the experience of being in that place, wherever it may be. It’s not about a particular location, but more how it makes me feel. There’s a sense of wonder and magic, the unknown of what is over the next horizon. A sense of endless possibility not constrained by the everyday: expectations, deadlines, or to do lists. The photographs I take are less landscapes than emotional portraits of the land.

Artist's Biography

Tara holds a BFA in photography from the University of Washington and is a member of the Columbia City Gallery in Seattle, WA. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Pacific Northwest including Vashon Island’s Koch Gallery, Moses Lake Art Museum, and Harris Harvey Gallery in Seattle, WA. Her public art can be seen on several King County Metro Bus Shelters and is included in the public collections of Swedish Hospital and Group Health. Her studio is located in the historic Inscape Arts Building in SODO.

Originally from NY, she has traded the one coast for another, but her love for the natural world has remained. She loves exploring the landscape, both cultivated and wild, with her trusty vintage film Hasselblad camera by her side.
